| It's ironic how "work" were started out so that people can have a way of making their ways through a day to provide food and shelter for their love ones. In another word, we used to just work in order to live. However, as time forwards and technology advances, the fundamental ideas of a job seem to have changed. We live to work. "WORK WORK WORK"-- is what everyone thinks about (for most of the time anyways). We make our agenda to suit our work schedule.
For the Japanese, it's even worst when it comes to work. It is not about the work itself, but only the politics of the workplace, ie how to make your boss think that you are the best worker there. The word productivity loses its meaning here. The Japanese took pride in themselves for their dilligence, which consists of being the first to come into work and the last to leave. It's actually "embarassing" to be the first to leave. But productivity is another story. It varies too. For some people, their work day consist of an average of 4-5 hours of REAL WORK! What the hell do they do for the rest of the time?-- mind you, a work day for a typical Japanese is 8am-10pm -- CRAZY! Those who have children do not get to see their children until the weekends. I have a kid at my school who probably haven't seen his parents since MAY, which was when his parents' work started. He's 2! Talk about workoholics! So should we work so hard that we forget about ourselves, our families and friends? NEVER, for those are the essential things to our individualities and wellbeing. Why would one want commit themselves to such a robotic life.
